Prone to Sunburn Now!
>> Tuesday, May 27, 2008
A few days ago when my family went to Toledo Zoo at Toledo, Ohio. I was confident not to be burned with the sun rays. Since while I was still in the Philippines, sun is not a big thingy over there except when we were at the beach, since salty water and hot sun rays can trigger burns, though. So, it is advisable over there to wear sun block, all the time. But here, I thought only citizens on this country can be prone to sunburn, and I guess, I was wrong. I have been here for almost 3 years now, and I guess my skin were changing. My tan color is gone, that's for sure. And I am all fair now! So, I guess, it is the reason why, I easily got sun burned last Saturday. And so, hubby told me that I need to apply for some sun block from now on! duh! I guess, I will, next time.
Potential forms of protection include wearing long-sleeved garments and wide-brimmed hats, and using an umbrella when in the sun. Minimization of sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is also recommended.
A sunscreen rated SPF10 blocks 90% UVB (but only as long as it did not penetrate into the skin); an SPF20 rated sunscreen blocks 95%. It is best to use a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect against both UVA and UVB radiation. It is prudent to use waterproof formulations if one plans to engage in water-based activities. Modern sunscreens contain filters for UVA radiation as well as UVB. Note that the stated protection factors are only correct if 2 μl of sunscreen is applied per square cm of exposed skin. This translates into about 28 ml (1 oz) to cover the whole body of an adult male, which is much more than many people use in practice.
So, I guess, I will get some of those sunblock!
